British Colonial Rosewood 4 Sunburst Cupboard

Mid 19th century

SGD 6,500

A British colonial rosewood cupboard in two sections. The cornice carved with an egg-and-dart pattern above a frieze carved with fleur-de-lys. The floating panels of all four doors are carved with a large oval sunburst design, centered with an oval disk and leaf embellishments in the corners. The frames of the doors are carved with elongated reserves and carved circles in the corner.
The interior of both sections are fitted with two shelves. The lower section finished at the top with a gadrooned edge, the bottom finished in the same carving and rests  on bun feet. The sunburst or ‘Surajmukhi’ is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity.

The cupboard is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
