British Colonial Rosewood Linen Press with Sunburst

Mid 19th century

A British colonial linen-press made of rosewood. The upper section with gadrooning on the edge of the flat top and intertwined fleur-de-lys carving on the frieze. The floating panels of all four doors are carved with a large oval sunburst design, centered with an oval disk and leaf embellishments in the corners. The frames of the doors are carved with elongated reserves. The interior of the upper section is fitted with two shelves, while the lower part houses one. The lower part features a gadrooned edge at the top and bottom and rests on bun feet.

The sunburst or ‘Surajmukhi’ is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity.

The cupboard has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The rosewood has a rich dark shade with a striking grain.
