British Colonial Rosewood Sofa

Mid 19th century

An antique British colonial sofa made of rosewood with a boldly carved high crest rail consisting of relief carved scrolling foliage, the apron also carved with a foliage pattern. The arms are of cylindrical form in cane and terminate with carved caps showing a running band of circles and flares at the bottom to attach to the seat frame. The legs below a rectangular rosette are turned with a spiral reeded cup and terminate in a disc with a peg foot. The back and seat have been re-caned in a “closed caning” colonial design.

The sofa is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
