EARTH DAY 2020 - 50th ANNIVERSARY

This year’s Earth Day will focus on climate action. In the words of the Earth Day Network this is “a huge topic which represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.”
Never before has the environmental movement been so strong, affecting all aspects of life, including the choices we make as consumers.

ANTIQUE FURNITURE - POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE

In the world of interiors there has been a seen a change in how people view the furniture they buy. A distinct movement away from throw-away furniture and an interest in sustainable furniture and antique or vintage items.

Consumers are more likely now, to appreciate craftsmanship and the age-old techniques used to make these pieces. They have a genuine interest in provenance and storytelling and are interested in what is known as ‘heirloom grade’ furniture. They are looking for something that will last a lifetime and beyond and can be handed down from one generation to the next.

As a result, we have seen a considerable growth in the interest of antique furniture. In particular, we see more young people investing in good quality antique furniture with sustainability in mind. Antiques were made to last a lifetime and beyond and have already stood the test of time. Therefore, buying an antique is recycling at its best, a beautiful addition to your home and a positive environmental choice.

ANTIQUES ARE GREEN

A few years ago, a report was carried out by an independent consultancy called Carbon Clear. In it they confirmed that antique furniture is likely to have a carbon footprint sixteen times lower than newly manufactured furniture. The report focused on the entire product’s life cycle from sourcing, manufacturing, transport, and disposal.

-
CANOPY PROJECT

As lovers of antiques we are very happy to see that antique furniture is gaining a new audience who truly appreciate it. We particularly support the Canopy Project, an initiative to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020 and which has a goal of planting 7.8 billion trees — one tree for every person on earth. Read more about this project here.

The scope of the environmental movements is huge and there is a lot more to do but maybe thinking about the sustainability of your furniture and examining your choices is a very good place to start for all of us.
