British Colonial Long Sunburst Cupboard

Mid 19th century

A British colonial long sunburst cupboard in rosewood with egg and dart carving on the edge of the flat top and fleur-de-lis carving on the frieze. The floating panels of the doors are carved with a large oval sunburst design, centred with an oval disk and leaf embellishments in the corners. The frames of the doors are carved with elongated reserves, the bottom finished with an egg and dart carved, moulded edge and rests on melon sectioned carved feet. The interior is fitted with three shelves. The sunburst or Surajmukhi is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity.

The cupboard is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
