Art Deco Rosewood Sofa Set
Early 20th centuryA fine Art Deco rosewood sofa set with a newly caned seat and back. Like all Art Deco furniture the distinguishing features of the style are simple, clean shapes, often with a “streamlined” look with geometric shapes.
The chairs and sofa feature one of the most popular Art Deco motifs, the sunburst. The form of the sunburst has been simplified to its geometric essentials, fanning out towards the hand rest, which itself sweeps in a curved form typical of the style. The seat height of the set is 36 cm or 14”.
Art Deco was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. It combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials.
The set is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
