British Colonial Rosewood Square Side Tables

late 19th century

A pair of British colonial rosewood tilt-top square side tables. The top is carved around the edges with an egg and dart design above an applied carved apron. The top is hinged to the central pedestal in such a way that it can be turned from a horizontal to a vertical position and, thereby, when not in use, takes up less space. The tapered square column is composed of three sections; the lower sections carved with stylized lotuses and encircled by a double band of gadrooning. It rests on a quatrefoil base with scrolled feet.

The tables are in good condition and have been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
