Art Deco Teakwood Davenport Desk
Early 20th centuryAn unusual Art-Deco style Davenport desk in teakwood with nicely contrasting rosewood details. It features a writing slope, with a black leather inset, that opens to reveal a large compartment with storage space for paper and other writing implements and four pigeon holes. On the flat top a small gallery. At the front the two triangle shaped supports for the writing slope are carved with a sunburst design. Down the left-hand side there are two drawers with a brass handle. On the right- hand side, behind a panelled door, a small compartment with one shelve. The base with a large shelve flanked on either side by six spindles.
The desk owes its name to a captain Davenport, who was the first to commission this particular design from Gillows of London near the end of the 18th century.
The desk is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Burma teak wood that this piece has been made of has a warm colour and an attractive, straight grain.
