Dutch Colonial Rosewood Storage Box

Mid 19th century

SGD 2,400

A very nice and decorative Dutch colonial storage box made of rosewood. It features beautiful pierced brass ornaments on the corners of the lid and all sides. On the top, a cleverly designed solid brass carrying handle. The box opens to reveal one large compartment flanked by four smaller ones. The original lock and hinges are attached by means of bolts with brass studs on the outside, a typical feature of the characteristic decoration of this type of colonial box. Two beautiful brass hinges secure the lid to the back. The box stands on four bracket feet.

The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade giving sharply defined contrast to the brass inlay work.
