This antique Dutch‑colonial ebony box is a fine example of Indo‑European craftsmanship from late 19th–early 20th century India. Made from dense, dark ebony it features hand‑cut brass corner mounts, domed brass studs and a shaped escutcheon, all designed to both strengthen and embellish the box. The rectangular form rests on turned bun feet, giving the box a pleasing architectural presence on a desk, console or sideboard. A hinged lid with central brass handle opens to reveal the original interior, including a fitted side compartment or till for coins, keys or small documents.

Boxes of this type were used by Dutch‑colonial officials and merchants across the Indian Ocean as cash and valuables boxes, echoing VOC document caskets while adapting to local Indian materials and metalworking traditions. The combination of ebony timber and warm brass was a preferred Dutch‑colonial style. Often associated with coastal centres on the Malabar and Coromandel coasts that specialised in brass‑mounted storage chests and writing boxes for the European trade.

Today, this Indo‑Dutch ebony box works beautifully for keeping jewellery, watches and secure storage for other keepsakes, or simply as a sculptural accent that testifies to a long life of service adding authenticity and charm to any living space.
