A nice example of Robert de Vaugondy’s copper engraved map of the Birish Isles, issued by C. F. Delamarche. It covers all of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Several important towns, cities, roads, rivers, lakes and other topographical features are noted, with elevation beautifully rendered. This map also offers splendid detail throughout with respect to undersea shoals and reefs in the surrounding waters. An inset of the Shetland, Orkney and Faroe Islands is included in the top right quadrant.
This antique map of UK and Ireland, drawn by Robert de Vaugondy in 1754 and first published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal, has been republished in 1797 by C. F. Delamarche.
About the cartographer
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723–1786), were leading map publishers, engravers and cartographers in France during the 18th century.
In 1757, they published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.
