British Colonial Rosewood Campaign Chest of Drawers
Mid 19th centuryA British colonial campaign chest of drawers made of rosewood. It is strengthened with brass strips around the edges and beautifully decorated with brass lining on the top and the drawer fronts. The upper section features two short drawers above one long drawer, the lower section has two long drawers The drawers are flush fitting with the original recessed brass handles. Like the majority of campaign chests, the present example can be split in two parts for ease of transport. The piece rests on four solid square feet.
Campaign or “knock down” furniture was portable military furniture and used by British officers when they set out for a campaign in India. However, because campaign furniture was extremely versatile, it also appealed to home owners who appreciated its elegance, strength and ease of storage.

The chest of drawers is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain. The drawer sides and bottom are made of teakwood and attached with fine dovetails to the rosewood drawer front. The backside of the chest has also been made of teakwood.
