British Colonial Camphor & Ebony Secretaire Chest of DrawersMid 19th century
A stunning British colonial campaign secretaire chest of drawers, solidly constructed of wide single planks of camphor and beautifully decorated with nicely contrasting ebony. The secretaire or writing drawer is positioned below two short drawers at the top part and is flanked by four short drawers. The lower part consists of two short drawers above two large ones. The writing flap pulls out and drops down to reveal a fitted interior with three small drawers and two arched pigeon holes. The writing surface with replaced black leather. All of the drawers are flush fitting with the original recessed brass handles and feature decorative ebony inlay and banding around the edges. The two reeded pillars on the side are both made from solid pieces of ebony. This very unique piece rests on bun feet.
The chest is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
