British Colonial Camphor & Ebony Secretaire Chest of Drawers

Mid 19th century

A stunning British colonial camphor secretaire chest of drawers with nicely contrasting ebony details. The top portion with six short drawers and one central secretaire drawer. This secretaire drawer pulls out and drops down to reveal a black leather writing surface and a fitted interior with three arched pigeonholes and a total of 9 small drawers with brass pulls. The lower section has two deep long drawers. All of the drawers are flush fitting with the original brass handles and feature ebony escutcheons and lining on the front as well as ebony banding around the edges. This truly unique piece is constructed of wide single planks of camphor with brass lift handles on the sides and rests on an ebony base with claw feet.

The chest has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The camphor wood has a rich warm shade with a striking grain.
