British Colonial Mahogany Sofa
Mid 19th centuryA British colonial sofa in mahogany with a masterfully hand-carved wooden crest. The centrepiece is adorned with a prominent shell motif, flanked by elegant scrollwork and foliate accents, reflecting the refined aesthetics of the period.The front of the frame, legs and arms are carved and the scrolled ends of the arms and seat frame above the legs display finely carved motifs. The seat and back have recently been re-caned in a pattern typical to the colonial style while the back has been double caned. The legs with a carved inverted cup, terminating in a disc and peg foot. The seat height is 41cm or 16”.
The sofa is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The mahogany has a rich warm shade with a striking grain.
