British Colonial Rosewood Sofa
Mid 19th centuryA nice British colonial sofa in rosewood with a straight crest rail. The arms are relief carved with a wavelike design while the scrolled ends display finely carved floral roundels; a motif also repeated on blocks above the legs. The seat and back have recently been re-caned in a pattern typical to the colonial style, while the back has been double caned. The reeded legs terminate in a large disc and a peg foot. The seat height is 37 cm or 14½”.
The sofa is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
