British Colonial Mahogany SofaMid 19th century
An elegant British colonial sofa in mahogany with a beautifully carved and pierced serpentine shaped crest rail centred by a floral design. The scrolled ends of the arms display finely carved floral roundels; a motif repeated on blocks above the legs. The seat and back have recently been re-caned in a pattern typical to the colonial style while the back has been double caned. The legs with a carved inverted cup, terminating in a large disc and a peg foot. The seat height is 41 cm or 16”.
The sofa is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The mahogany has a rich warm shade with a striking grain. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
