British Colonial Rosewood Bookcase
Late 19th centuryA British colonial bookcase, expertly crafted from rosewood. The upper section features a flat cornice adorned with a gadrooned edge, gracefully complemented by an intricately carved foliate frieze. Behind the twin glass doors, the interior offers four robust teakwood shelves, providing ample display and storage space. Below, two lockable drawers showcase striking sunburst motifs and retain their original recessed brass pulls, set above a further gadrooned molding. The entire piece stands elegantly on finely tapered and fluted bun feet, exemplifying refined colonial craftsmanship.
The bookcase is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
