British Colonial Ebony Jewellery Box
Mid 19th centuryA delicately carved British colonial ebony jewellery box. It features geometric carving amid stylized trellis and foliate designs on the top and the four sides. The interior houses several small compartments and a mirror. The mirror can be brought forward from the lid and rests inside the frontal compartments of the interior. It has an attached curvilinear base with a moulded edge.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. Ebony (Diospyrus Ebenum) is a black wood of very close grain and heavy in weight.
