British Colonial Sandalwood Box with Tortoise Shell
Early 20th centurySGD 1,750
A British colonial sandalwood box with a slightly raised cover, veneered with tortoise shell and ivory fretwork. The panel on the lid has a central cartouche engraved with a bird on a branch. It is framed by an ivory border engraved and highlighted with a floral design followed by a band of fretwork that runs around the lid. The edges and corners of the lid and box are reinforced with strips of ivory secured with silver rivets. The lid opens to a plain interior. The original small key still present. The box stands on four ivory paw feet.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
