British Colonial Teakwood EtagèresLate 19th century
A nice pair of British colonial étagères in teakwood with four fixed and graduating shelves between nicely carved supports. It is also supported at the back by a slender upright with a finial on top. The back design allows it to stand in a corner. The étagère became a popular form of furniture in the nineteenth century. Similar to the what-not, the shelves of the étagère provided extra space for the display of the accumulation of knick knacks that was typical of Victorian home décor.
The étagères are in good condition and have been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
