Dutch Colonial Triple Opening Writing Box
Late 19th centuryAn antique triple opening writing box made of beautifully figured satinwood, the lid framed in ebony. The box opens to reveal a sloping front lid that opens out into a writing surface. The lower part of the writing surface with storage space, while the top part features one large secret drawer behind a panel that is inlaid with ebony in a geometric design. At the top, a penholder made of solid ebony and five more storage compartments, two of which have a secret drawer. The inside of the lid features a paper rack made of satinwood and ebony. The box stands on four small bracket feet.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
Satinwood is a highly figured, close-grained, hard, durable wood native to India and Ceylon. It is light yellow to golden brown in colour with a lustrous satin-like quality and has an excellent finish.
