Early on in family life, it might hold a highchair pulled in close at one end while the rest of the table is cleared for whatever meal is underway. WHY IT IS BUILT TO OUTLAST THE MOMENT

The reason these tables can carry so many roles over many years comes down to construction. Antique dining tables from this period were built using joinery designed to hold under weight and movement over decades, not laminate or veneer over a lighter frame. The timber itself was cured slowly, which is what gives it the density and stability to resist warping or damage from years of plates, elbows and homework books. A solid wood dining table built this way rarely needs anything beyond careful restoration, even after a hundred years of use.

One recent piece of furniture we brought in illustrates this well. A restored antique dining table without any chairs. We wanted 8 chairs but there were not enough matching antique chairs in the right style and condition to sit alongside it. We worked with our dealer to customize and design the chairs in India, built to match the proportions and character of the original table. We also selected seasoned old wood for the project. It is a good example of how we approach these pieces, restore what can properly be restored, and commission thoughtfully when the original cannot be found. Either way, the goal is furniture built to be used for another generation, not furniture that needs replacing within a decade.

This is also why choosing well tends to work out as a more sustainable choice than it first appears. No new timber is felled for it. It has already proven, over a hundred years or more, that it can withstand daily life. Buying an antique dining table properly, once, tends to mean not choosing again for a very long time. LIVING WITH IT DAY TO DAY 

Because the wood itself is so well made and so carefully maintained, a table like this works whether it is dressed up or left simple. For a gathering, we often suggest bringing in flowers, vases or a few pieces from our brass and copper colonial decor selection, which sit naturally alongside furniture from the same era. For everyday use, a single table runner or nothing at all suits the piece just as well. 

A round dining table, in particular, tends to benefit from being dressed simply, since decoration works best when it does not compete with the table's own lines. The table does not need styling to look considered. The wood and the proportions do that work on their own.
