British Colonial Rosewood Chess Table

Late 19th century

SGD 1,650

A colonial chess table crafted from rosewood and teakwood, featuring an inlaid chequerboard top framed by four rounded drop leaves. Raised, the leaves create a distinctive quatrefoil outline; folded, they reveal a compact square playing surface. Spiral-turned supports, a pierced decorative apron and a shaped base with scrolling feet complete this elegant and versatile piece.

The table is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain giving sharply defined contrast to the satinwood inlay work.
