



















Dutch Colonial Teakwood and Rosewood Chest
Late 19th centuryA Dutch colonial storage chest of solid plank construction in teakwood within a contrasting rosewood frame. The front features a brass escutcheon with original lock and keys. The overhanging top is further decorated on all corners with beautiful brass ornaments. On the sides fixed-plate brass bail handles with stylised terminals are set between two escutcheons. Inside there is a small document compartment while two large hinges secure the lid to the back. The four corners of base are also decorated and strengthened with brass mounts. The chest rests on four bun feet ending in a peg with a brass cap.
People owned a number of chests. The many moves from post to post undertaken by the trading companies officials in the course of their careers made the chest an indispensable item of furniture in every household. They were mainly used for storage, but due to their striking appearance also served as a display of wealth by the owner.
