Dutch Colonial Satinwood & Ebony Box
Late 19th centurySGD 3,650
A big size antique Dutch colonial cash box made of beautifully figured satinwood, the lid beautifully decorated with serpentine shaped ebony inlay. Brass mounts strengthen the box on the four corners. Simultaneously they are a nice decoration. The sides have brass carrying handles, the front with a brass escutcheon surrounded by four brass knobs. The box opens to reveal an interior with many (lidded) compartments. It features a lift-out tray that gives access to a large storage compartment sided by four small drawers. Two nice hinges secure the lid to the back.
Satinwood is a highly figured, close-grained, hard and durable wood native to India and Ceylon. It is light yellow to golden brown in colour with a lustrous satin-like feel to it and a nice coconut oil smell.
The box is in good condition. It has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
