British Colonial Rosewood Carved Cabinet
Early 19th centuryA magnificent antique rosewood cabinet with a deep cornice consisting of a wide band of egg & dart and floral carving. The frieze is also relief carved in a floral design. The cabinet has double doors with beautifully carved and pierced panels within a relief carved frame; they open to reveal four shelves. Along the sides of the doors beautifully carved solid pillars. The sides of the cabinet are carved with a large oval sunburst design, centered with an oval disk and leaf embellishments in the corners. The sunburst or Surajmukhi is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity. The base rests on four carved claw feet.
The cabinet is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
