Keralan Jewellery Box
Late19th/Early 20th centurySGD 3,100
Indo‑Portuguese rosewood portable coffer, Goa, late 19th century. Trapezoidal hinged lid with pyramidal interior, original interior compartments, and pierced foliate of hand forged 19th century strapwork to lid, lock plate, and corners. A vernacular echo of 17th‑century Goan Indo‑Portuguese coffers, retaining the dark rosewood carcass and characteristic foliate metal mounts of Goan colonial craftsmanship.
This ethnic jewellery box (Nettoor Petti) is quite unique and was once the mark of aristocracy in Kerala (South India), the place of its origin. Very few well-experienced craftsmen who learned this from their ancestors are doing the craft now.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
