British Colonial Rosewood Campaign Chest of Drawers

Mid 19th century

A British colonial campaign chest of drawers made of rosewood.  Like the majority of campaign chests, the present example can be split in two parts for ease of transport. The top portion has two small and two short drawers over one longer drawer. The lower section has two deep long drawers. All drawers are flush fitting with the original recessed brass handles. Solidly constructed of single planks of rosewood with brass corner mounts. On the sides brass carrying handles. The piece stands on bun feet ending in a ring and peg.

Campaign or “knock down” furniture was portable military furniture designed to be disassembled easily or collapsible for ease of transport. It was used by British officers when they set out for a campaign in India.

The chest is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain. The drawer sides and bottom are made of teakwood and attached with fine dovetails to the rosewood drawer front. The backside of the chest has also been made of teakwood
