British Colonial Rosewood Spice Cupboard
Late 19th centurySGD 4,150
The upper section comprises two paneled cupboard doors adorned with raised geometric panels and elegant brass rosette escutcheons and corner mounts. Below, the cabinet reveals its primary function as a spice storage piece, featuring twelve apothecary-style drawers arranged in three rows of four, each with recessed panels and individual brass rosette pulls. The lowest section contains two full-width drawers with brass bound edges, star-shaped mounts, and keyhole escutcheons, flanked by additional brass rosette corner decorations.
This versatile cabinet would have originally been used for storing valuable spices such as cinnamon, cassia, and nutmeg—precious commodities in the colonial spice trade. Today, it serves beautifully as a decorative storage piece, equally suited to organizing small items, displaying in an entry hall, or anchoring a collector’s cabinet of curiosities.
