Portuguese Colonial Mahogany Settee
Late 19th centuryA richly carved antique Portuguese colonial settee in mahogany with a quadruple back. The shields of the balloon chair backs are carved in an elaborate floral pattern as are the undersides of the scrolled arms. The very deep, scalloped apron has floral carving as well. The bench stands on two reeded, tapered front legs and eight raked rear legs, the outer front and rear leg connected by a stretcher. This very decorative piece is finished with a newly caned seat.
The settee is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The mahogany has a rich warm shade with a striking grain.
