Dutch Colonial Ebony BoxEarly 19th century
A very nice and decorative Dutch colonial box made of precious ebony. It features a beautiful pierced brass escutcheon and pierced brass ornaments on all corners and sides. On the top a pierced brass plate with a solid brass carrying handle. The box opens to reveal two small compartments that share a lid as well as two larger storage compartments. The original lock and hinges are attached by means of bolts with brass studs on the outside, a typical feature of the characteristic decoration of this type of colonial box. Two beautiful brass hinges secure the lid to the back. The box stand on four elegant brass feet.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. Ebony is a rare, expensive black wood of very close grain and is heavy in weight.
