Pair of British Colonial Rosewood Bookcases
Mid 19th centuryA magnificent pair of antique British colonial bookcases in rosewood with a deep cornice consisting of a wide band of floral carving and egg and dart carving on the edge. The bookcases have double doors with bevelled glass panels within a rosewood frame; they open to reveal an interior with three shelves. Along the sides beautiful, spiral turned pilasters.
The sides are boldly carved with a large oval sunburst design, centered by an oval disk. The sunburst or “Surajmukhi” is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity. The base has floral carving, an egg and dart carved moulded edge and rests on four protruding claw feet.
