Pair of Indo-Portuguese colonial Rosewood Side Tables

Late 19th century

SGD 5,400

A distinctive pair of Indo-Portuguese colonial rosewood pedestal tables, featuring circular tops framed by richly carved floral borders. Beneath each top, an elaborate pierced apron combines flowers, foliage and scrolling forms, creating a lace-like effect that contrasts with the smooth tabletop. The deep, lustrous finish highlights the carving and gives the pair a strong sculptural presence.

Each table rests on an ornamented central column, with a bulbous upper section above a tall pedestal carved with stylised leaves and floral details. The columns terminate in spreading tripod bases, decorated with further floral carving and sweeping legs that curl upwards at the feet. Their complementary proportions and decoration make them an elegant pair for placement beside seating or as matching display tables.

The tables are in good condition and have been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made off has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
