A handsome solid rosewood chest, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and attributed to the Indian-made Arab-trade tradition. The richly figured timber is complemented by pierced brass mounts in scrolling floral and foliate designs, with an elaborate keyhole escutcheon centred on the front. A large floral medallion decorates the flat, hinged lid, framed by a slender brass border and ornamental corner plates. Substantial decorative brass strap hinges complete the interior.

Chests of this tradition were made in India to store household valuables, and for storage and transport in the shipping trade across the Indian Ocean. These markets included Arabia, the Gulf and East Africa; the designation “Arab chest” therefore describes a cultural and trading association rather than necessarily an Arabian place of manufacture. Fully restored to reveal the depth and character of its rosewood grain and the intricate brass decoration, this example combines generous storage with a striking architectural presence, equally suited to placement at the foot of a bed or as a distinctive centrepiece in a living room.
