British Colonial Cedarwood Box

A beautiful British colonial box made of cedar wood, expertly and profusely relief carved on the four sides with foliate design. The central figure, Krishna , is shown overcoming the serpent Kaliya and then banishing the serpent instead of killing it. This establishes her not only as a symbol of divine protection but mercy. The front is also carved with a pair of human-headed, lion-bodied mythical creatures, called purushamrigas or Indian sphinxes, flanking the lock escutcheon amid dense flowering scrollwork. Further stylised birds and animals are found throughout. This amazing box is truly the work of a master carpenter who included symbols of messengers from the gods and protection for its owner.
The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.
