Portuguese Colonial Rosewood Cabinet
Late 19th CenturySGD 5,600
A stunning Indo-Portuguese colonial rosewood cabinet with floriform ‘x’ crosses made with v-gouge lines on the frieze below the moulded cornice. The two doors are bordered with a chip‑carved surface pattern built from repeated crosses and sheaves of stylised foliage. The upper cupboard with doors is seated on a separate base featuring one long locking drawer and serpentine carved lower edge. The interior of this exceptional cabinet is fitted with three pull out shelves with additional carved floriform ‘x’ crosses on the shelf facings. Hidden under each shelf is a narrow slide out drawer. For ease of transport it consists of two parts.
The cabinet is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made of has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
