British Colonial Rosewood Sideboard

Mid 19th century

SGD 5,500

A very decorative British colonial sideboard made of rosewood. The sideboard has decorative floral carvings surrounding the frame of the cabinet. The sides are boldly carved with a large oval sunburst design, centered by an oval disk opening to reveal an interior with 2 shelves. The cabinet stands on a carved base supported on four carved bun feet. The sunburst or “Surajmukhi” is a typical motif of the state of Gujarat signifying prosperity. The term means “sunflower” in Hindi and Urdu. The word derives from Sanskrit, where “suraj” means “sun” and “mukh” means “face,” literally translating to “sun-facing”.

The sideboard is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The Indian rosewood that this piece has been made off has a naturally occurring dark shade with a striking grain.
