British Colonial Ebony Dressing Box

Mid 19th century

An extraordinary and delicately carved British colonial or Anglo-Indian solid ebony dressing box. It features geometric carving amid stylized trellis and foliate designs on the top and the four sides.
It opens to a gorgeous interior with several small carved and inlaid compartments, a lift out tray and a mirror. The mirror can be brought forward from the lid and rests on the frontal compartments of the interior.
The box rests on an attached curvilinear base with a moulded edge.

The box is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing.

Ebony (Diospyrus Ebenum) is a black wood of very close grain and heavy in weight.
